The A696(M) was signed at Town Moor Interchange, back when the Central Motorway East was the A1(M). It was a very short motorway consisting of short slip-road stubs, though was to be extended along the Claremont Road Motorway, which opened as the all-purpose A696, bypassing that road's original route along Barrack Road. It is now part of the A167(M) and A167.
