Boghead Roundabout

Boghead Roundabout sits less than a mile to the north west of J4 of the M8, and connects the motorway with its predecessor, now numbered as the A706 / A7066, although it was the A8 before the motorway opened. On opening, the junction was a 5-arm roundabout where the A7002, B7002, A706 and A7066 all met, the fifth arm being the minor road to Drum and Pottishaw Farms, which was previously a continuation of the B7002 into Whitburn. Since opening, another road has been squeezed in to the north west corner of the junction, although it is likely that this was already planned when the roundabout was built. This is the A801, intended to be a strategic north-south link between the M8 and M9. When the A801 opened, it also absorbed the former line of the A7002 to take it across the M8 and meet the A705 a short distance to the south.

Since the motorway and Boghead Roundabout were built, the land to the east of the A801 link road has been developed as a business / distribution park, which has inevitably resulted in the free flow link road being interrupted by another, smaller roundabout to provide access.

History

Before the motorway was built, the junction at Boghead was a simple crossroads between the A8 and B7002. The B7002 to the south has been severed by the motorway, but its old line is still named Bathgate Road as it meets the A705
