Heatherfield Roundabout lies at the the junction of the A89 and the A801 between Armadale and Bathgate. It was built as part of the new A801 line in the 1980s, and so forms part of the strategic link between the M8 and M9 through West Lothian.
The roundabout is a simple 4-arm junction which on the face of it shouldn't see too much turning traffic as both towns have better links to the north and south. However, as the B708 a short distance to the south was carried over the new road on a bridge, it was clearly felt that there would be enough turning traffic to make it worth interrupting the flows. For about half a mile to the north, the A801 is dualled, and it is likely that had the Avon Gorge section been completed, more of the route would be dual carriageway by now.
