The A3022 was one of the four original Class I roads on the Isle of Wight.
The road started in the centre of Newport on St James Street, the original route of the A3020. It headed east along the High Street and left town to the northeast along Fairlee Road.
It met the A3021 near the long-gone Whippingham station, before continuing east via Wootton Bridge, where it crossed Wootton Creek. After going over Quarr Hill it entered Ryde and zigzagged through the town. It ran along the High Street and Union Street before ending next to the pier at the sea front. The road to the right was the A3023 next to.
The entire road was renumbered as an eastern extension of the A3054 in 1935, making that road an east-west route across the island.
