Dartford is a medium sized town near the Thames Estuary. It is best known for its Tunnel and Bridge and it is also where the Rolling Stones were founded. It was also where national newspapers got their paper from until the 1930s.

Its this town where the first renumbering due to a building of a new road after classification happened. It was for the First Dartford Bypass.

History

Dartford is on Watling Street, it has been bypassed three times (not counting the A282/M25 route that passes close to the east of the town).

First Dartford Bypass

This is B2174 as seen on a overbridge.

see main article:First Dartford Bypass

Built in 1924, bypassing Watling Street, Princes Way (currently B2174, A225 and A226) took the A2 around Dartford.

Second Dartford Bypass

This is the A2 at Leyton Cross just east of the Dartford Heath Interchange.

see main article: Second Dartford Bypass

The Second Dartford Bypass takes the A2 on a motorway-quality alignment further to the south of Dartford than the original A2 bypass.

Third Dartford Bypass

This is River Darent at the 3rd Dartford Bypass overbridge.

see main article: Third Dartford Bypass

The Third Dartford Bypass, Bob Dunn Way, takes the A206 round the north of the town.
