Finglas Interchange is junction 1 of the N2 and junction 5 of the M50.
This was originally built as just a roundabout junction. It met the N2, which was single carriageway to the north and dual carriageway to the south.
In 2006, the N2 north of here received a significant upgrade, with it now connecting to the M2. With this came two new left-turn lanes, and a large increase in traffic.
The Finglas Interchange itself received a major upgrade, which was finished in 2010. In 2012, the N2 south of here was downgraded to R135. The new, elaborate junction is fully free-flow, except for routes heading south, as traffic needs to prepare for the Charlestown crossroads.
The original plan for the M50 had no junction here, with North Road passing under the M50 without an interchange. Instead a new road to Ashtown would have met the M50 just west of here. A drawing dated 1973 showed this as a cloverleaf.
