Dun Laoghaire is a seafront town, positioned close to Dublin.

It became a famous destination when the port opened in the 1820s, at which point it was named Kingstown and expanded rapidly. From transport point-of-view, Dun Laoghaire would be dependent on its road and rail connections to Dublin, hampered not-least by the hills to the south and coastline to the east.

Even today, road connections to the two motorways within its council boundary are not obvious. The N31 exists to direct traffic around the suburbs.
