Dun Laoghaire, is a seafront town, positioned close to Dublin.
Originally, the name was anglicised as Dunleary, the town became an important destination when the port opened in the 1820s. It was re-named Kingstown following King George IV's 1821 visit, and expanded rapidly. In 1920 the town was renamed back to Dún Laoghaire, with no English translation.
From transport point-of-view, Dun Laoghaire would be dependent on its road and rail connections to Dublin, hampered not-least by the hills to the south and coastline to the east. Even today, road connections to the two motorways within its council boundary are not obvious. The N31 exists to direct traffic around the suburbs.
