Brownhills Interchange is junction T6 of the M6 Toll.
History
The preferred route for the Birmingham Northern Relief Road in 1987 had a roundabout interchange located to the west of the present junction at Pool Lane. Norton Canes services was to be sited at the southwest corner of the roundabout.
In 1988 alternative plans were produced which moved the junction to Ogley Hay Road. The layout of the junction is the same as the 1987 proposals but without the services. The A5195 Burntwood Bypass was an integral plan of these early proposals and Wharf Lane was to pass beneath the motorway.
After 1988 the BNRR was promoted as a privately funded toll road. The initial plan from Midland Expressway in 1991 was for the services to be sited where the junction was planned. The westbound services would be roughly where the 1987 junction was planned and the eastbound services is on the site of the 1988 proposals.
The plans for the M6 Toll evolved after this and the eventual junction was a trumpet on the site of the 1988 proposals. Wharf Lane ended up becoming severed.
