For the junction on the A556, just to the north, see Tabley Junction.
Tabley Interchange is junction 19 of the M6 and opened in 1963. A simple roundabout interchange, it forms the main turn off for Manchester from the south. As such, several times a motorway has been proposed to the M56, or even all the way to central Manchester. Also proposed was an extension of the M6 Toll alongside the M6 from south of Stafford to this junction. The M6 Toll extension has been replaced with smart motorway improvements to the M6 and the motorway has been replaced with a new-build A556 dual-carriageway.
2016 Junction Improvement Consultation
Two options were presented in 2016 for improvements to the function - these were:
- Option A - a central bridge providing cut through right turn movements from the M6 n/b to new A556 and a reverse cut through turn turn movement from the M6 s/b to the A556 w/b
- Option B - widening of the existing circulatory carriageway
Free flow options in the consultation were discounted before public preference was asked for; and none of the options appeared to address the weaving issues between the junction and the motorway service area to the south.
Option A was selected as the preferred route option and statutory instrument published in July 2019 and construction commenced in 2020. The expected cost is £43m at 2019 prices.

- The A556 Trunk Road (M6 Junction 19 Improvement Northbound and Southbound Link Roads) Order 2019 - ighways England Company Limited are authorised to construct two new link roads of the A556 Trunk Road as described in the above Schedule, running through the centre of the A556 Trunk Road roundabout at M6 Junction 19, and crossing over the M6 Motorway on a new bridge. This Order designates the new link roads as trunk roads from the date this Order comes into force and Highways England Company Limited as the highways authority for the new link roads from that date. The new link roads will provide a more direct route through the roundabout for traffic travelling from the M6 Motorway southbound to the A556 Principal Road southbound, and the M6 Motorway northbound to the A556 Trunk Road northbound, respectively, removing the need for such directional traffic to use the circulatory carriageway of the A556 Trunk Road roundabout.
