Milton Bridge crosses the River Nethan at Lesmahagow on the former main road from Glasgow to Carlisle.
Construction
The 3 span bridge was 280 feet long (centre span 140 feet) and 60 foot wide and was constructed by Alex Findlay & Company Ltd. of Parkneuk. Its listing describes it as an early example of a large scale steel cantilevered road bridge.
History
The new bridge was slightly downstream from Telford's Bridge. Bridge construction was expected to last for 6 months from the first part leaving the factory in March 1938. It was dual carriageway and part of the Lesmahagow to Newfield Inn section of A74 which was being constructed.
It became the B7078 following the opening of the adjacent M74 in 1986, but was kept as dual carriageway.
