The B1053 is a rural B-road in west Essex.
In 1922 it started on the A131 in the centre of Bocking, now a suburb of Braintree. However, the A131 bypass has now been built so the B1053 has been extended along part of that road's old route to meet it.
The B1053 leaves Bocking in a relatively northwesterly direction following the River Pant. It crosses the B1057 in Finchingfield and then enters Great Sampford. The original route of the B1053 past the village was along Sparepenny Lane but this road is now closed to through traffic and so the B1053 is diverted past the church and pub (where it meets the B1051), suggesting that Great Sampford has actually had its bypass removed.
The B1053 continues west through Sewards End into Saffron Waldon. It ends on the edge of town on the B184 and therefore does not get involved in the complicated classification of town-centre roads.
History
For a time in the 1960s, and perhaps beyond, the B1053 also included a short loop in Braintree Town centre, from the A131 to the A120 along Courtauld Road. This is now unclassified once more.
