Steel Roundabout is a roundabout located within the Black Country town of Wednesbury.
It marks the point where traffic between Wolverhampton and West Bromwich along A41 crosses traffic between Walsall and Dudley along A461, to the north of their short multiplex. The roundabout was constructed in the early 1990s along with the A41 Black Country Spine Road.
History
The Black Country Spine Road was planned to be grade separated throughout when designed in the late 1980s. Poor ground conditions and escalating costs resulted in major cutbacks to bring down the cost of the road. This meant all the planned grade separation was abandoned. Steel Roundabout would have been on three levels - Spine Road on top, roundabout in the middle, westbound underpass from A461 to Automotive Component Park at the bottom. The roundabouts were built in roughly the same places as the original plans but the Spine Road passes beneath the Midland Metro line which was originally intended to be the link between the two roundabouts rather than the mainline.
