Western Way Interchange is an unbuilt junction southeast of Wolverhampton that was part of the original route for the A41 Black Country Spine Road. Its name comes from the road the junction was to connect with. The junction would have been located roughly where Western Way and Southern Way meet in the Moxley area at the extreme north end of Wednesbury.
History
The route of the Black Country Spine Road between Moxley Junction and Steel Roundabout differs from what was originally planned. It would have followed an alignment to the west of its current route and Patent Shaft Roundabout was not part of the original plan. Poor ground conditions and rising construction costs made the original scheme prohibitively expensive and ways of reducing the cost had to be found. This was achieved two ways, firstly by dualling the existing A41 Holyhead Road between Moxley Junction and Patent Shaft Roundabout instead of building an entirely new route. The other way of reducing the cost was by replacing the planned grade separated junctions with conventional roundabouts.
The end result of these changes was that Western Way Interchange was no longer required.
