Wednesbury is a small industrial Black Country town located between Wolverhampton, Walsall and West Bromwich, and is within the historic county of Staffordshire. Whilst the extreme northern part of the town around Moxley and near Darlaston is functionally part of Wolverhampton, the majority of the town is functionally part of the Black Country, and therefore is today almost indistinguishable for outsiders from the rest of the conurbation.

It is sometimes confused with nearby Wednesfield.

History

Wednesbury on the 1923 MoT Map

Wednesbury is located on the historic Holyhead Road coaching route between London and Holyhead, now the A41 and A4196 in the area; although the Holyhead Road itself passed just to the west of the town centre.

However, the town centre today is recognisably similar in roads terms to that in 1922, with the major changes being that through traffic has been diverted away from Market Place and the rest of the centre of the town, in favour of a small dual carriageway relief road improvement along Dudley Street and High Bullen completed in the early 1970s; before north-south traffic along A41 was re-routed via the Black Country Spine Road in the late 1990s.

Highways Management

The roads within Wednesbury are mostly managed by Sandwell Council, though some areas in the north of the town have their roads managed by Walsall Council. There are no Trunk Roads managed by National Highways within the town.

Routes

The only Primary Routes through the town are the A41 and A461; whilst the M6 runs just to the north, forming the functional boundary with Walsall.
