Route : Church Road, Albany Road
Church Road and Albany Road form the C281, linking St Annes with the Ansdell suburb of Lytham. It is part of the major bus route through the towns and passes through an overwhelmingly residential area.
Church Road in St Annes begins as an unclassified road, at the junction of Headroomgate Road, adjacent to St Annes Parish Church which gives it its name.
After crossing St Annes Road East (B5233), Church Road becomes the C281. It then intersects St Albans Road, a busy suburban shopping area. After passing the traffic-light controlled junction with St Thomas's Road, it ends at the junction with Smithy Lane, which marks the border between St Annes and Ansdell. At this junction can be found a health centre and a small annexe of Blackpool and the Fylde College.
After Smithy Lane, the C281 continues as Albany Road. It passes Lytham St Annes High Technology College, one of the largest secondary schools in Lancashire, located at the junction of Albany Road and Worsley Road. Due to the school's size it accounts for most of the rush hour traffic on the road.
Albany Road finishes at a mini-roundabout with the B5261.
Historical notes
Church Road, and Albany Road west of the High School, were originally known as Common Side Lane, which ran along the southern edge of the former Lytham Common.[1] The route of the lane also included parts of the present Worsley Road, Central Drive, Gordon Road, and the eponymous Commonside in its entirety. (This is also the current bus route.) Commonside terminates at the B5261, a few hundred metres east of the Albany Road junction.
Due to the parallel development of St Annes and Lytham, a number of road names are duplicated. There is another unrelated Church Road in Lytham. As that Church Road forms part of the B5261, most journeys to Lytham via the C281 include both roads.
