Preston is a city in the traditional county of Lancashire. It is the third largest city in the North West of England.
The city is traditionally a large market town and became a centre of the cotton industry during the Industrial Revolution. It was awarded city status during the Queen's Golden Jubilee Year of 2002. It is an important meeting point of several cross country routes and was the first town in Britain to have a motorway bypass (now the M6 and M55).
