The C53 starts on the B7072 in the Riccarton area of Kilmarnock, and heads south along the sourthern part of New Street. This then becomes Witchknowe Road then Treeswoodhead Road as it heads out of town. After crossing the A77 bypass, the route curves to the east, and then continues south east to the council boundary near Mosside. The road continues the short distance to meet the A719 at Carnell.
