Sussex

Sussex is a traditional county on the South Coast of England. The county has been split into West Sussex (administered from Chichester) and East Sussex (administered from the county town of Lewes) for some years, although the internal border was moved east in 1974.

Geography & Economy

Newhaven

The long, thin county stretches from the London commuter belt to the English Channel. The South Downs run across the middle but get closer to the coast as they continue east, reaching the sea at Beachy Head; there is only a coastal plain to the west of Brighton and in the marshes east of Eastbourne. Although much of the coastline is straight the west of the county contains the inlets of Chichester Harbour and the Manhood Peninsula, leading to the county's southernmost point at Selsey Bill. Much of the county consists of woods or fields, although the coast is largely urban; places like Rye and Newhaven are still ports, with ferries to France running from the latter, but Brighton has been a resort since the 18th century and coastal tourism is very important to Sussex. In the north, the New Town of Crawley is the largest settlement away from the coast and benefits from its proximity to London and Gatwick Airport.

Roads

Owing to the shape of the county, the majority of roads in Sussex radiate from London, with the main exceptions being the A272 and A27/A259 coast road. The county has a comprehensive road network with the exception of the area of the South Downs, which forms a reasonable barrier. National Highways maintain the A27/A259 coast road and the main radials from London. There are no trunk roads in Hastings for historical reasons: county boroughs did not contain trunk roads and this situation remains here although the county borough was abolished in 1974. Non-trunk roads in Sussex are maintained by West Sussex County Council, East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council; the last-named is one of the UK's few federal cities.
