Vehicle registration

Current format

Vehicle number plates are black on white at the front, and black on yellow at the back.

Registration marks issued in Great Britain currently consist of two letters serving as a regional identifier (e.g. SX, SY = Scotland, Inverness), followed by a two-digit number indicating when the vehicle was registered (e.g. 14 = March to August 2014), then a further three, randomly allocated, letters.

The numbers indicating the period in which the vehicle was registered are allocated as follows:

  • for vehicles registered between 1 March and 31 August: the last two digits of the calendar year;
  • for vehicles registered between 1 September and 28 or 29 February: the last two digits of the calendar year in September + 50.

So, for example, number plates issued in the period March to August 2018 include the number 18, while those issued in the six months after that (September 2018 to February 2019) include the number 68.

Northern Ireland, however, uses a different system.
