ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition and is used by the Police, central government organisations and local highway authorities for identification of cars for enforcement and traffic monitoring.
They are also used for road user charging purposes as an alternative to toll booths. Examples of ANPR based systems include:
- London Congestion Charge
- London Low emission zone
- A282 Dartford Crossing
The Channel Tunnel also has ANPR cameras as a means of identifying vehicles at check-in.
ANPR Cameras may also be used for traffic survey purposes. By locating temporary ANPR cameras at all entrances and exists to a particular area, it is possible to develop a matrix of routes taken by traffic. Applications include determine the percentage of through traffic in a town as well as demand for particular routes.
ANPR is also used for car parking enforcement and charging, using entry and exit times to confirm length of stay against the paid duration. This assists some forms of ticketless parking via parking apps.
