A Park and Ride facility is a car park constructed to allow for travel mode transfer between private cars and public transport. Most are located on radial routes into towns and city centres to allow for transfer to buses, but a number are constructed next to rail or tram stations to transfer to those vehicles, leading to colloquialisms such as Park and Tram. Park and Ride services are also provided as a temporary feature for major events, whether by providing different services from established locations, or as a short term set up such as the service provided between Fort William and the Nevis Range centre at Torlundy for the Mountain Biking world Cup events.
Whilst many Park and Ride services operate 7 days a week, some only operate Monday to Friday, for city centre workers, whilst others only operate at weekends to cater for shoppers. Additional services are also provided in some locations to cater for Christmas shoppers. Generally speaking, although by no means always, those services which operated 5-7 days a week are purpose built, whilst those with more limited operations often use pre-existing car parks, such as out of town council offices which are only used Monday to Friday. Similarly, quite a lot of sites are based in the car parks of Football Stadiums, and so naturally are not available on match days.
Signage
Due to the differing nature of the public transport, a range of signage is used, featuring buses, trams, or trains, or the National Rail symbol.
