Perhaps more familiar to watchers of motor racing, chicanes on the roadway are designed with the same purpose; to reduce vehicular speeds.

The design can consist of an extension to a footway or pavement (Build-Outs) or the use of traffic islands or other raised areas on the carriageway. Typically, these would be in pairs placed a little way apart, to create a necessary right and left deflection for passing vehicles and thus slow traffic. They also have an effect of narrowing the available space and in many circumstances, create an effective single-lane working.
