This article is very lacking on detail. Sections on each type of VMS used in the UK (MS1, MS2, MS3, MS4, EMS, AMI, CMI) should be added!

A variable message sign can display differing messages depending on conditions. VMS have been installed on motorways since the late 1960s, and more recently on other high quality roads. They originally contained small symbols or words (such as "fog"), but have since expanded to include larger variants that display full messages, generally warning about traffic or travelling conditions ahead.

The current guidelines for VMS messages are set out in the TSRGD.

MS2 was trialled on M25 J8-13 in February 1992. Surrey Police said they "needed early feedback" from drivers.
