Belziehill Junction

Belziehill Junction is a large roundabout interchange sitting above the dualled A725 to the west of Bellshill. It connects the trunk route to the A721 and the B7001, which subsequently provide access to the large Righead and Bellshill Industrial Estates that sit either side of the A725 to the north of the junction. As a result, it is an extremely busy junction with a lot of commercial vehicle movements. The roundabout was built in c1970, first being shown as part of the new A725 route on the 1971 map, the A725 previously having passed through the centre of Bellshill to the east. At the time of opening, there were no industrial estates, although it is likely that they were planned at around the same time. The roundabout is a long oval in shape, the two parallel sides running close to the dual carriageway, with curved bridges to north and south. The A721 is the only exit on the east side, but to the west the A721 and B7001 depart on nearly parallel routes. The large size of the junction means that it has not been signalised to date.

History

Prior to the construction of the A725 Bellshill bypass, the route passed through the town centre some distance to the east. The only junction in the vicinity of the current roundabout therefore was the fork junction between the B7001 and A721. In fact, the A721 now departs the junction on the former route of the B7001, Gartcosh Walk. The residential road Lockett Yett View a short distance to the south appears to be the original line of the A721. The actual fork appears to have been sited somewhere in the paved area before the newer roundabout for the industrial estate is reached.
