Birkenshaw Roundabout is situated immediately to the north east of the Maryville Interchange where the M73 terminates on the M74. However, it has very little to do with that junction, instead being a simple at-grade roundabout between the B7001 and the A721. The A721 approaches from the west as a dual carriageway, but after a very short section of S4, Glasgow Road reduces to be a wide single carriageway to the east, primarily in order to accommodate turning lanes for the next couple of junctions. All three routes have two approach lanes, however, to separate turning traffic.
Until quite recently, the A721 terminated on the A74 at Powburn Toll a little to the east of this junction, however new signage much further in to the city and some mapping changes confirm that the A74 has been renumbered as the A721 as far as Daldowie Interchange. The suggestion that the whole A74 was to be renumbered has, however, proven unfounded.
