Motherwell is a large town to the south east of Glasgow. In some respects, it is a depressing place, the vast Ravenscraig Steelworks that helped build the town now demolished and cleared, the modern brick and concrete town centre having none of the charm and character of a traditional shopping centre, and the surrounding urban sprawl turning the town into little more than a dormitory suburb of Scotland'd largest city. However, there is more to Motherwell. The Strathclyde Country Park almost reaches the town centre and is a pleasant oasis popular with locals and visitors alike (even if the constant hum of motorway traffic fails to make it peaceful), the old steelworks site offers hope for new industry, new homes, new facilities. Motherwell is, after all, well connected by road and rail to the rest of Scotland, and has potential.

The main roads in the town itself are the A721 and A723, which cross in the centre, forming a partially one-way loop around the town centre. The A721 runs out from Glasgow, continuing south east through Wishaw to the A73, whilst the A723 starts in the industrial belt along the M8 motorway, continuing south west through Hamilton. Before reaching Hamilton, it crosses the M74 at Hamilton Interchange, a fully free flowing junction set in parkland on the banks of the River Clyde.

There are also several B roads in the town, the B754 forming a connection between the two A roads to the south of the town centre, and then continuing through housing estates to Wishaw. To the north of the town, the B799, B7029 and B7066 all meet the A723 in a suburban area which is not really part of Motherwell, but not really separate either. New Stevenston and Holytown were developed in the post war period and have continued to see redevelopment of brown field sites, with changes to the road network too. The B7066 follows the former route of the A723, which now follows a more westerly line to the M8.
