The B31 is a loop off the A29 in central County Armagh, providing a more direct route from Newtownhamilton to Armagh. The A29 reaches Armagh via Keady, and is twisting but relatively flat, which may have been an attractive feature in the past.
The B31 has several climbs, reaching 900ft, and is relatively straight. The A29 route is 3.2 miles longer and takes an additional 5 minutes drive time, so the direct B31 is invariably preferred by modern traffic except perhaps in winter conditions. The B3 crosses the B31 about 6 miles from Newtownhamilton.
