Baillieston Interchange and the A8(M) with Swinton Roundabout to the left

Swinton Roundabout forms the western part of the Baillieston Interchange where the M73 crosses the M8. Swinton Roundabout is connected to the main interchange roundabout via the A8(M), and so provides a connection to surface streets from the motorways, and vice versa. The junction is a large four-arm signalised layout, connecting the A8(M) with the A8 and A89 (in a multiplex with the A8 throughout). The fourth arm connects into a housing estate to the north west and is largely unnecessary, as the estate has multiple other access points. There are two or three spiralled circulatory lanes around the roundabout, and three of the four approaches are fully dualled with two (three for the north western part of the A8) approach lanes. Although correctly signed when it opened, the A8(M) is now signed as M8 (M73), apparently to avoid confusion.

The roundabout was opened in c2017 as part of the completion works of the M8, filling in the gap in the motorway that previously existed to the east of Baillieston Interchange. The A89 had previously crossed the A8 at an acutely skewed crossroads a short distance further west, which is now a slightly easier to navigate fork junction. The main reason behind the change was to give better access to the motorway from the east now that the motorway was complete and only had limited access at a number of points which formerly had direct access to the A8.
