Junctions related to the A33

Kings Worthy Interchange is at the northern end of the original Winchester Bypass. It was originally a crossroads where the line of the A33 bypass crossed the B3047, but this was overshadowed by the A34 being joined with a fork arrangement in 1969.

The original layout of the junction

As the A33 has been bypassed by the M3, this route now sees much lower traffic levels, and the northbound side has been reduced to one lane. This creates the peculiar situation where the vast majority of traffic exits onto the A34, and the 'mainline' A33 route is relatively empty, creating congestion.

As part of the improvements to Winnall Interchange, the A33 and A34 will be separated. The A33 will take a new line as a single carriageway broadly following the current southbound carriageway. The northbound carriageway will be converted to a shared access foot and cycle path. The new road will return to its original dual carriageway layout immediately before the crossroads. This has attracted concern from Hampshire County Council, who have proposed the junction either be signalised or turned into two roundabouts, but no funding has been provided.
