Pepperstock is M1 junction 10. It was the site of the first roundabout in the country to be subject to motorway regulations, and the first motorway spur not to have its own number.
It was where the Pepperstock - Crick Motorway scheme, that formed the bulk of the London - Birmingham motorway began on the St Albans bypass.
Half a century later the bridges were replaced to accommodate the widening of the M1 beneath; the new bridges were built alongside the old ones, in such a way as to enlarge the roundabout.
With the opening of the Kidney Wood Roundabout grade separation scheme, the M1 between Pepperstock and Kidney Wood and the circulatory carriageway of the roundabout was de-specialised and renumbered as a spur of the A1081.
