Warren Lane, (formerly Warren Lane Roundabout) is junction 24A of the M1. It is a modified trumpet interchange, with some movements being completed by the nearby Kegworth Interchange.
Previously, it was a limited access junction providing north facing links between the M1 and A50 with an associated roundabout to provide access to the south and the local road network..
History
There was no junction here when the M1 opened. The junction was built shortly after the A50 southern bypass of Derby, which had opened in 1997, to relieve Junction 24 of additional traffic. The junction layout was intended to be temporary as the roundabout was only an interim measure until the whole J23a-24a complex was rebuilt to provide freeflow movements between the main routes. The original scheme never happened but another scheme was put forward in 2007. This would have provided a second roundabout to turn the A50 junction into a dumbbell. In 2009 this scheme was also abandoned.
In July 2018, the roundabout was finally replaced as part of major works in the area, which comprised:
- The construction of a rail freight terminal
- Widening of the M1 to incorporate all lane running
- A southern bypass for Kegworth
- A Direct free flow link for A50 eastbound traffic to merge onto the A1 southbound.
This significant amount of construction also required modification to the Kegworth Interchange, and the closure of the A50->A453 cut through.
