East Leeds Link Interchange is junction 45 of the M1.
History
Constructed as part of the M1-A1 link scheme in 1999, this junction remained closed for almost a decade whilst Leeds City Council went through the legal processes to divert the A63.
When the junction finally opened, the effects of natural reclamation of the slip roads had necessitated a total rebuild of the carriageways. This also led to re-profiling of the direct links between the slip roads and the link road as signalisation of the roundabout was part of the new design.
The link road has revolutionised traffic patterns in south east Leeds meaning the M1 now has higher traffic volumes than it did previously.
In 2016, a consultation occurred on the siting of an off-line Motorway Service Area at the junction. Leeds Skelton Lake services opened at the interchange in 2020.
In 2017 it was announced that work to widen the sliproads and circulatory carriageway of the roundabout would be carried out between January and August, at a cost of £8.3m.
