Marble Arch forms the large junction at the northern end of Park Lane. As a major junction on the London Inner Ring Road it is consequently very busy and is now signalised.
The Marble Arch itself was moved here in 1851 to form an entrance to Hyde Park at Cumberland Gate. In the start of the 20th century, Cumberland Gate was moved back a little, creating a large area where it was now possible to drive all around Marble Arch.
Subways were provided in the 1940s, but the changes were otherwise minor until 1962. In this year, a much larger junction was created by expanding to the south and the east, to accommodate the new, dual carriageway, Park Lane. Gardens were provided on the larger traffic island, and Tyburn Way still existed through the middle as a section of the old roundabout - it's now open to buses only.
Oxford Street begins at this junction, so does the A5 on its northwards journey to Holyhead. In addition to the main roads, there is also an entrance to Hyde Park through North Carriage Drive and a junction with unclassified Great Cumberland Place to the north.
