Traffic modelling describes the use of mathematical models to simulate real-world road traffic. The models can be used to forecast future traffic conditions.
Strategic models
These are large-scale, low detail models which may cover an entire county. Software includes PTV VISUM, Aimsun and SATURN.
Microsimulation models
These are medium scale models which may cover a series of junctions along a corridor, and model the random interactions between individual vehicles. Software includes PTV VISSIM, Aimsun and Paramics Discovery.
Junction models
These are small-scale, highly detailed deterministic models of individual junctions. Software includes LINSIG for signal-controlled junctions, ARCADY for roundabouts and PICADY for priority junctions.
