The ZC4 meanders past some of Edinburghs more famous landmarks. It starts on the A700, Lothian Road, opposite the B700, and heads east along Bread Street, working its way through below the castle to the picturesque Grass Market. Continuing along Cowgate, it passes under the King George IV Bridge, and then under the A7, South Bridge. Cowgate becomes Holrood Road as it heads for the Scottish Parliament, but the route has to detour along Queens Drive to reach the Palace of Holyrood House, the old road line being removed when the parliament building was built.
From the roundabout at the Palace, the ZC4 follows Abbey Hill round to the A1, and then Easter Road across the B1350 and on, heading north now to Leith Links. At the roundabout it turns right on to Hermitage Place, the Gladstone Place to reach the A199, Seafield Road at a set of traffic lights.
