The B901 is a short urban B-road heading north from Edinburgh city centre. As with the B900, the route followed doesn't appear to have deviated from that set out in 1922.
The route starts on the edge of the New Town on the A900, Leith Walk, at the Picardy Place gyratory. This junction is being thoroughly rebuilt to accommodate the extension of the tram system, but appears to be maintaingin full access between the two classified routes. The road heads north west along Broughton Street, skirting the eastern edge of Edinburgh's New Town, with a mixture of shops and businesses filling the ground floors of the tall terraces. London Street is crossed at an elliptical roundabout, beyond which the streetscape becomes grander, with the fine Bellevue Crescent set back behind lawns and dominated by the classical church at the centre. A hundred yards further on and the shops and tall tenements resume, creating a strange oasis in this suburban artery!
The B900 is then met at traffic lights, with westbound traffic able to continue across, while eastbound traffic has a short detour along Canon Street followed by a multiplex with the B901 to reach the signals. The route then follows Canonmills, which winds round to cross the Water of Leith at Canonmills Bridge. Inverleith Row then leads past the substantial Tanfield Office block, largely hidden by trees, before passing the Royal Botanic Garden, which lies behind the houses on the left and so is invisible from the road. Inverleith Row continues north west past a mixture of tenement blocks and semi detached villas to end at traffic lights on the A902 Ferry Road.
