For Gilmerton on the A85 east of Crieff, see Gilmerton Junction.
Glimerton Junction is a limited access junction with the A772 on the City of Edinburgh Bypass. It is a half dumbbell design, with west facing slips only, primarily due to the proximity of Sheriffhall to the east. It does, however, help to remove some traffic from Sheriffhall Roundabout, as the A772 connects to the A7 a little to the south of Sheriffhall, meaning that a lot of traffic heading west from or east to Dalkeith uses Gilmerton. The A772 is the original line of the A7, the latter being re-routed onto the former A68 alignment when Dalkeith's western bypass was built.
Before the bypass existed, Gilmerton Road followed a straight line through the site of the junction, avoiding the double bend through the junction. The old line of the route can still be traced on the north side of the bypass, serving a few properties just off the roundabout. There is a suggestion that this connected to the bypass when it originally opened, as an eastbound onslip, but if it did it was closed up fairly quickly. It seems unlikely, however, that there was ever a westbound offslip as it would have met the A772 at a T junction, and there is no evidence that this was ever the case.
