Hermiston Gait is junction 1 of the M8, where it meets the City of Edinburgh Bypass. As the bypass was built before, the addition of this junction for the M8 and retail park (dating to the same time) meant a rebuild of the A720 between Calder Junction and halfway to Gogar Roundabout in order to deal with the weaving traffic.
The original plan for this junction in the early 1970s was for a three level stacked roundabout with the M8 passing below to continue to the centre of Edinburgh. With no braiding and potential for weaving the Calder Junction would have been built further south with a connection to the B701 rather than the A71.
