Lancaster Circus

Lancaster Circus is at the north east end of the former Birmingham Inner Ring Road. For a junction in such an urban context it is impressive that it is a three level roundabout with the A34 passing underneath in a tunnel and the A38 on a flyover above.
What is less impressive is how James Watt Queensway to the south suddenly stops where it used to become Masshouse Circus and turns into a 20 mph bus mall. It remains unclear if the A34 underpass will remain as it is now redundant following the loss of the east side of the ring.
Prior to the current junction being built, Lancaster Place was a pair of roundabouts, positioned south of the current junction. The alignment of one of them can be seen in the bend on Steelhouse Lane.
