'Lochinver is a small town and fishing port on the west coast of Sutherland to the north of Ullapool. The town is a long way from anywhere, but the largest settlement in a vast tract of sparsely populated country and so offers shops and services way in excess of what such a small settlement would normally offer. Lochinver is also a popular destination for tourists in the area, and is included on the NC500 tourist route.

The main road into the town is the A837, which has been heavily upgraded to a full S2 road able to cope with the heavy lorries that use it, to transfer the fish from the fishing boats that come into the harbour. The B869 to the north, in contrast, is a very different sort of road, single track, twisty and hilly but a fantastic (if slow) drive for those with the time to explore. The only other through route from the town is the unclassified road south which winds its way south to Achiltibuie, and a turning back to the A835 and so Ullapool.
