Barthomley Interchange is junction 16 of the M6.
When the M6 section from J15 Hanchurch to J20 Lymm opened on 15 November 1963, Barthomley Interchange remained closed at first, because there was no road for it to connect to. The A500 eastward to the A34 at Talke Interchange was under construction and opened on 15 May 1964.
A westward link towards Nantwich, to connect with the then A52, was always intended, but the first proposed route attracted much local opposition and it was not until the 1980s that a new route was finalised. The A500 Barthomley Link to the west opened in July 1987.
As part of the revised scheme, Radway Green Road was extended south to meet the interchange and became B5078. The roundabout thus had to accommodate one more arm than originally intended, and was extended westward to allow this.
The Cheshire-Staffordshire boundary passes within a few yards of the centre of the interchange.
