The C23 follows the largely pedestrianised Main Street in Kilsyth. This used to be part of the B802, before it was re-routed out of the town centre to the west. Starting at the north end, the C23 heads south from the A803 and carries traffic as far as the first junction, with Burnside Street. The next section, to Market Street, is fully pedestrianised, with access only to emergency vehicles and essential maintenance. This traffic is turned left at the further end into Market Square, partly because the remainder of Main Street has gone. Where the street used to continue to rejoin the B802 route, the RBS Bank now stands, preventing through access even to pedestrians.
