The C73 starts on the A71 at Allanton, the first few metres being a former section of the main road, and heads north. It crosses the railway at Hartwood and then passes between Shotts Prison and Shotts itself. Continuing to meander northwards over the hills, it reaches the B7066 between Salsburgh and Shottsburn. A dogleg to the right onto Duntilland Road sees it cross the M8 and turn north west, the hills becoming less populated, before the road drops down to meet the C72 at Moffat near Plains.
