The C54 starts at a roundabout on the A73 on the southern edge of Cumbernauld, and dog-legs eastwards via a second roundabout onto the original line, which has been stopped up by the construction of the new main road. It then heads south, passing under the railway and wiggling around some partly flooded quarry pits. After climbing up and passing near the summit of Summerhill, the road comes to an end on the B802.
