The C72 starts on the A89 east of Plains and heads south east, then south west along Stepends Road as it climbs up the hill and crosses the golf course. It then drops past an old quarry and becomes Roughrigg Road which leads down to a roundabout junction with the C71, Towers Road, on the edge of Airdrie.
