Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is the Roads Authority for all public roads in the Western Isles (there are no Transport Scotland roads in the area covered by the council). As of 2016, Government Statistics say that the council is responsible for 203.7 miles of A roads; 99.8 miles of B roads and 496.9 miles of other roads.

The present authority was formed in 1975 as Western Isles Council / Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. The English-language version of the name was removed from official usage in 1997. Until 1975 responsibility for roads on the Isles rested with the former Inverness-shire and Ross-shire roads authorities.
