Stornoway is the main settlement on the Western Isles and is located on the Isle of Lewis at the northern end of the chain of islands. It is the only town in the Western Isles, with supermarkets, shops, the Islands College and main Hospital. However, due to the strict religious observance in a large proportion of Lewis' population, few of these services are open on a Sunday. The recent introduction of Sunday sailings on the Lewis Ferry caused major controversy amongst the population.

The town is also the hub of the road network on Lewis, with all four of the main A roads radiating out from, or near to the town. The A866 heads east to the Airport and Eye Peninsula, the A857 heads north to the northern tip of the island, the A858 heads west, although it no longer reaches Stornoway as it has been diverted to meet the A859 further south. The A859 itself heads south across the mountains to Harris, and is the main spine road on the island, reaching the ferry for the Uist chain at An t-ob.

The B895 heads north from the town along the east coast, through the villages of Col, Bac and Tolsta and is an enjoyable drive, whilst the B897 heads south, winding through the hills to Crosbost. In Stornoway itself, the B8027 is a short link along Matheson Road which bypasses the town centre.
