Eurocentral Junction is Junction 7 of the M8. It was completely rebuilt as part of the M8 completion project and primarily serves the large Eurocentral Distribution Park which lies alongside the motorway to the south. Both the current and original junction are Dumbbell Interchanges, although while the older junction was a full access interchange with the A8, conversion to motorway means that the new junction only connects to the western M8, traffic to and from the east having to use the parallel A8 to reach with the motorway.
Old Junction
The old junction was built to serve the Eurocentral Distibution Park that lies to the south of the A8 here. It was a new junction added between two existing ones, leading to quite closely spaced sliproads. The junction was a full access dumbbell interchange without a northern exit, while two unclassified routes led off of the southern roundabout into the distribution park. Since it opened, Eurocentral and the neighbouring Newhouse Industrial Estate have become home to a significant number of distribution depots serving Scotland, thanks to their close proximity to the motorway network and location at the heart of Scotland's central belt. It was therefore considered imperative that a full access junction was maintained when the A8 was upgraded to Motorway standard.
New Junction
The junction was completely rebuilt to accommodate the new M8. To the east this was essentially an online upgrade of the old A8, with new, parallel carriageways for the A8 to either side, providing a total of four traffic lanes in each direction. To the west, the new motorway was built offline, but the A8 retained, giving five lanes in each direction towards Glasgow. The new junction saw both roundabouts substantially enlarged to accommodate the extra sliproads and also moved slightly apart to allow the new motorway to be built. West facing slips provide direct access onto the M8, but as noted above, to the east traffic must use the A8 and pass through the Chapelhall Junction before reaching the motorway. This has removed the weaving problems which were occasionally encountered in the past, but does mean traffic has to navigate an extra roundabout when heading to or from Edinburgh.
