For the original junction 12, see West Ferry Interchange.
Cumbernauld Road Interchange is junction 12 of the M8, connecting it with the A80. Prior to the opening of the M80 in 1992, this junction formed the main route between Glasgow and Stirling and surrounding areas. This helps to explain the design of the junction. The layout is a modified diamond interchange, with the westbound onslip folded inside the offslip. This meant that traffic from Stirling to Glasgow had a left turn to join the motorway, while the presumably much smaller amount of traffic turning from the southern part of the A80 onto the westbound M8 has a signalised right turn, combined with the right turn from the westbound offslip. The eastbound sliproads meet the A80 at a more usual signalised crossroads, however the onslip is indirectly accessed via a section of the B765, Gartloch Road. Priority is given to traffic joining the motorway, with westbound traffic on the B765 having to give way to the sliproad.
The junction was originally built in 1975, when the M8 was extended west from Townhead Interchange to meet the M80. It was extended further east in 1979, meaning that for around four years this junction formed a temporary terminus.
