Governors Bridge is a roundabout which takes its name from the small bridge which lies on a loop of old road to the north west. It is a four arm roundabout connecting the A18, which heads north, with the A2 which passes from east to west. The fourth arm is the old road over Governors Bridge, which is normally unused, but is still part of the TT Circuit. Due to being one of the busier junctions on the island, each approach has two lanes, apart from the unlined old road.
The Bridge
The actual Governors Bridge is a small arch at the bottom of a substantial stone embankment over a small stream flowing down through the town, which roughly marks the boundary between Douglas and Onchan. A datestone set into the parapet appears to suggest that the bridge dates back to 1769, although it is badly worn and difficult to read. The bridge was bypassed many years ago by a new embanked culvert, producing a much straighter line for the A2 to follow.
